Sri Owen was born in Central Sumatra, and has lived or traveled in most parts of Sumatra, Java and Bali. Married to an Englishman, she has lived in London for the past fifteen years, raising a family, cooking and writing about Indonesian food, and broadcasting.

She learned to cook in the traditional way, by watching and tasting, and has combined her practical experience with research to prepare this successor to her first book, which was published in 1976. Indonesian Food and Cookery has a much enlarged number and range of recipes, and exhaustive list of enlarged number and range recipes, an exhaustive list of fruits, vegetables and spices in common use in Indonesia, and a long introduction describing Indonesian cooking and eating habits and the place of food in Indonesian social life. It also includes fifty-one original drawings by the Laotian artist Soun who came to England as a refugee in 1979.
